Thinking about new windows?

There’s a lot to consider when swapping out windows.  Budget, quality, energy efficiency, maintenance, warranty, installation and so on.    If you are just getting started in the process of investigation, it may be daunting.  To help you get started, here’s some considerations in deciding the right window for you along with information on a top-rated window company.

Why replace your windows

First of all, something has drawn you to decide to replace your windows.  After all, windows weren’t designed to last forever, and you may be getting tired of putting up plastic year after year.  According to one source, the average lifespan of windows is typically between 15 and 30 years.  This of course depends on the window materials, the quality of installation at the time and the climate zone where you live.  Some obvious signs of ineffective windows are:

  • Single pane glass
  • Poor seals – windows do not effectively keep out drafts
  • Excessive condensation
  • Fogging inside of the glass
  • Difficulty in opening and closing
  • Dry rot, cracking & splitting of wooden frame.

If you are considering selling your home in the near future, new replacement windows may not be a consideration for you, although it will likely help influence a buyer’s decision about your home. According to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value report, on average you stand to add an additional $13,766 to your home’s value by replacing your windows.  Not to mention the visual appeal this could have on prospective buyers.

If moving is not in your immediate plans, then it is worth taking the time to do your homework and investigate windows that will provide the best value for your investment.  There are many resources available regarding replacement window characteristics, some of which that follow have been obtained from U.S. News 360 Reviews, “Best window replacement companies in 2024.”

Considerations when choosing replacement windows

Materials

Living in a northern climate where keeping warm is right up there on your priority list, you will likely want to consider replacement windows made of wood or vinyl (versus aluminum) because of their insulation factors.  Vinyl is typically cheaper than wood and requires little to no maintenance.

Glass is another significant factor in the energy effectiveness of a window. Insulating characteristics of glass is measured in terms of the U-Factor – how much heat flow or heat loss occurs through the glass due to the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures.  The lower the U-Factor, the better the window insulates.  Whether selecting double pane or triple pane glass, the goal is to keep heat from escaping in the winter and deflect heat from entering in the summer. By the way, if you live in a noisy area, you may want to consider triple pane glass – it helps insulate the house from outside noise.

Energy Efficiency

The energy efficiency of your windows should be tailored to the climate zone where your home is located. It’s important to select windows that are suited to your environment. In addition, seek out windows that are certified by ENERGY STAR ® or the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Both organizations offer online tools that allow you to search for certified products and review their specific energy ratings.

Window Sizes

When requesting a quote for replacement windows, a reputable company will send a professional to measure your windows accurately and provide a detailed estimate. Replacement windows must fit properly within the existing wall, so any unusual shapes or sizes will require custom manufacturing. This can lead to potential delays and additional costs, which should be discussed openly by the installer.

Warranty Coverage

Window manufacturers typically offer warranties that vary in length depending on the part of the window. For example, some window frames may be covered for up to 20 years, while glass may have a shorter warranty of 10 or even 5 years.   One of the better warranties is from ProVia windows – lifetime workmanship and lifetime glass.  Additionally, even comprehensive warranties from the manufacturer might not include labor costs, meaning the homeowner could be responsible for paying for the installation of replacement parts.

Installation Services

As John Jervis from the American Window and Door Institute points out, “Even the lowest-quality window will perform better and last longer if installed correctly, compared to the best window installed poorly.” Each window brand comes with its own unique design elements—such as frames, seals, and weatherstripping—that require precise installation techniques. If an installer is unfamiliar with the brand’s specifications, the window’s performance could be compromised, negatively affecting its energy efficiency, security, and overall comfort.  Make sure the contractor you choose is familiar, better yet, certified from the window manufacturer to install their windows.
